as the man said, “go west young man, go west………”

from this…..

to this….

once upon a time, there is a radio talk show host whose real actual positively right name is robert jerome puffer.  he is currently doing what is called “afternoon drive” ksen in shelby, montana.

“the puffman” also does a variety of other things at the station like a show that helps listeners to swap things with other listeners, and he does the occasional commercial.  he has been in the radio business for 43 years.

to put this in the proper perspective shelby has about 3,000 people and the radio station charges about five bucks for a commercial.  it is, however, part of the clear channel chain which owns about nine per cent of the radio stations in the united states and is a multi million dollar multi national corporation.

now, here is shelby, montana……check out their web site.

one of amtrak’s major trains, “the empire builder” stops in shelby on the way from chicago to the west coast.

it is also the land of the armed missle silos…

here is the “puffman.”

he has bladder cancer and to find out a little about that disease, you can listen to an interview that he did by clicking here.

to put it bluntly, the medical and travel costs (he has to make many trips to the mayo clinic in rochester, minnesota) has destroyed the financial situation of he and his wife, nada.  so, the good folks decided to raise some money and they thought that the gabby cabby could help.

this is the pilot who knew how to find shelby….

this is the airplane he flew….

this is the stewardess who served the food….

this is the finished meal….

jerry and nada puffer picked up the gabby cabby at the great falls, montana international airport.  as they drove to shelby, thousands of good folk lined the highway.  (maybe it wasn’t thousands.)

a guiding force for the fund raising weekend was mayor larry bonderod.  here he is at one of the many functions with his wife, sharon.

the mayor actually found an old checker cab and had it fixed up real pretty so that the talk show host and the cabby could drive around giving people rides.

here is a short movie which shows the owner of the taxi, annie wiegand and her son, george.  just click for grandma and remember to reduce your screen for better quality.

we took two of her friends, sigrid hjartason and ivy nelson, for a taxi ride.

good folk raising money for jerry…..

the johnson brothers entertained us at the sunday morning service at the new life community church. pastor fred brown leads the flock.  you can see a short movie by clicking on church.  remember to reduce the size of your screen for better quality.

on a number of ksen broadcasts, the gabby cabby has said that the sheriff donna matoon of toole county (shelby) is a real fox.  good thing she was in a good mood when the city slicker arrived.

shirley gardipee, married to ed, the folks who gave the gabby cabby the horse to ride, probably didn’t like that he complained that there was no horn.

listen to how leonard matteson, auctioneer helped to raise money for jerry at the church potluck dinner and auction.  click on money.

jerry’s aunt, mae metcalf, who is part blackfoot indian was asked to tell an indian joke.  hear it at funny.

jerry puffer and his wife nada sure have a nice looking family.  this is a picture of nada and her sister kim whose husband is also named jerry. some of their kiddies were present.  they raise horses and you can check out their web site at horse.

here are good folk who helped out….

mark daniels is the news director of ksen.  he did this interview at the end of this fantastic four days.  listen to it here

maybe they were ready to ride the gabby cabby out on a rail.

****thanks to mike basher, a fine professional photographer in shelby for his help in producing this web site.

finally, some closing advice to jerry and nada puffer.  listen to elvis.
